Coeur d’Alene, Idaho – March 26, 2024
It is with deep dismay and profound disappointment that I address the recent deplorable incident involving the reprehensible behavior exhibited towards female college basketball players from the University of Utah and UC Irvine. On Thursday, March 21, as these young athletes were simply walking to dinner in downtown Coeur d’Alene, they were subjected to hateful actions by a few individuals.
Let me be unequivocally clear: the actions of these individuals are not reflective of the values or character of the people of Coeur d’Alene. We are a community that prides itself on inclusivity, kindness, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds or affiliations. The abhorrent behavior demonstrated by these individuals goes against everything we stand for as a community.
To the women who were the targets of this despicable behavior, I offer our sincerest apologies. No one should ever have to endure such treatment, especially as they are guests in our city. Please know that you have our full support, and we are committed to ensuring that those responsible for these acts are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
I want to assure the affected individuals, their families, and the broader community that our law enforcement team is actively investigating this matter. We will not tolerate such behavior, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that justice is served.
It is crucial to emphasize that the actions of a few individuals do not define us as a community. We stand united against hate and bigotry, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
Once again, on behalf of the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber and the entire community, I extend our deepest apologies to the women who were subjected to this appalling behavior. You have our unwavering support, and we will continue to stand with you as we strive to build a better more compassionate, and inclusive community for all.
Sincerely,
Linda Coppess President and CEO Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber
