There is a reason so many of us choose to call North Idaho home.
It’s the sense of community. The way people show up for one another. The pride we take in our businesses, our schools, and the natural beauty that surrounds us. It’s a place people care deeply about—and that care comes with a responsibility to help shape what comes next.
On May 19, Idaho voters will participate in the primary election. And in a state like ours, that moment carries more influence than many realize.
The Reality of Elections in Idaho
Idaho has long been a predominantly Republican state. In many races—particularly at the local and legislative level—the candidate who wins the Republican primary is very likely to win the general election.
That makes the primary one of the most important opportunities to influence who represents our community and how decisions are made.
The Impact On Our Community
Each legislative session brings decisions that directly affect the issues we hear about every day from businesses and families across our region:
- The strength of our education system
- Access to affordable healthcare
- Availability of attainable housing
- Investments in infrastructure
- Solutions to ongoing childcare challenges
These decisions shape our workforce, our economy, and the long-term sustainability of our community.
A Participation Gap We Cannot Ignore
In Idaho’s most recent primary elections, voter turnout was in the mid-20% range—meaning roughly three out of four eligible voters did not participate in selecting the candidates who ultimately represent them.
Those who consistently vote in primaries are often highly engaged and committed to the process—and their participation matters. But it also underscores an important truth: when more people participate, the outcome better reflects the full community.
If we want strong representation and thoughtful decision-making that reflects the needs of our entire community, participation is where it begins.
A Critical Moment in Kootenai County
This year, voters in Kootenai County will again experience an important moment. Alongside the official Kootenai County Republican Central Committee (KCRCC), the continued growth of the North Idaho Republicans (NIR) reflects differing perspectives on party leadership and direction. While these differences may be debated, they also highlight how important local engagement has become.
One of the most influential—and often overlooked—areas on the ballot is the Precinct Committeeman and Committeewoman races. These individuals (neighborhood representatives) help shape party leadership, influence candidate selection, and play a meaningful role in the direction of future elections.
