BUILDING PLACES THAT MATTER — AND RELATIONSHIPS THAT LAST.

Take a look around Coeur d’Alene and North Idaho, and you’ll find spaces that quietly shape everyday life—hospitals, schools, civic buildings, and gathering places.

Chances are, many of them were built by Bouten Construction.

For more than 80 years, Bouten has been doing construction—and what sets them apart is how they do it: with consistency, strong partnerships, and a long-standing commitment to the communities they serve.

A Legacy That Still Shows Up Today

Bouten Construction was founded in 1944 in Spokane by Gus J. Bouten. What started as a small homebuilding effort quickly grew—thanks in part to an early opportunity to build for the Sisters of Providence, a relationship that still reflects how the company approaches its work today.

Their connection to North Idaho goes back decades, with early projects in Coeur d’Alene beginning in the 1940s. Since 2012, they’ve maintained a steady and growing presence in the region—delivering projects and building strong partnerships along the way.

Today, Bouten brings together a team of more than 120 professionals, along with skilled tradespeople, working across healthcare, education, civic, and commercial sectors.

What They Do Best

Bouten specializes in commercial construction and preconstruction services—but what clients value most is how early they get involved. By stepping in during the design phase, their team helps bring clarity to cost, identify smarter solutions, and reduce surprises down the road.

They also bring a hands-on approach to the job—self-performing key work and leaning on experienced superintendents who know how to get things done the right way.

A Purpose You Can See in the Work

At the center of everything they do is a simple idea: build things that matter—and build relationships that last.

“What I love most about this work is being with people I value—our clients, our teams—and helping bring a shared vision to life,” said Kreg Shelby, Project Executive. “It’s about solving problems together and building something that truly matters.”

That purpose isn’t just internal—it shows up in the projects they take on and the partners they choose.

At a recent Kootenai Health Prairie Medical Campus groundbreaking, Bouten President Tim Thomas shared how closely that purpose aligns with the work happening right here in our region:

“Our purpose—building places that matter and relationships that last—it’s almost like we wrote those words for this project.”

Building What Matters—Right Now

The Prairie Medical Campus is a powerful example of that purpose in action.

“We are building a place that matters to the growing region… a place that matters to the community of Post Falls… and a place that matters to our employees,” Thomas shared, noting the region’s rapid growth and the increasing need for accessible healthcare.

This project expands access to care, supports a growing population, and strengthens the long-term health of the community.

Impact that Goes Beyond the Build

One of the things you hear most about Bouten is their presence in the community.

They support more than 60 nonprofit organizations, and their team members serve on over 20 local boards.

But their impact goes beyond donations or volunteer hours—it’s built into the work itself.

“People often know Bouten for how involved we are in the community—but at our core, we’re builders,” said Karlee Agee, Vice President of Operations. “What sets us apart is why we build. These spaces become the backdrop for some of life’s most meaningful moments.”

Local Impact—People, Jobs, and Partnerships

Projects like the Prairie Medical Campus also bring meaningful economic and workforce impact.

“About 20% of our team lives in North Idaho… they’re getting very excited to be working on a project close to home,” Thomas noted.

“We will be employing hundreds of trade partners and tradespeople to build this project—and that is very meaningful, especially in these economic times.”

Bouten’s work is deeply tied to the local economy—supporting jobs, strengthening trade partnerships, and creating opportunities across the region.

And just as important are the relationships behind the work: “We’re building relationships with long-standing partners… and with the local trade partners who will perform this important work with us.”

Projects That Shape Our Region

Here in North Idaho, Bouten has played a role in several major projects, including multiple expansions at Kootenai Health and the Kootenai County Justice Center Expansion—delivered under budget and ahead of schedule.

But Bouten’s work extends far beyond large-scale healthcare and civic projects. The company serves clients across a wide range of sectors, including nonprofit, commercial, education, and community organizations. One local example is St. Vincent de Paul North Idaho, a longtime community resource whose mission aligns closely with Bouten’s commitment to building places that strengthen communities.

In addition to large, highly visible projects, Bouten also has a dedicated Special Projects Group that specializes in smaller-scale, complex, and technically challenging work. These projects often require creative problem-solving, careful coordination, and the ability to work within active facilities—all areas where the Bouten team excels.

Whether it’s a major healthcare campus, a public safety facility, a nonprofit organization, or a specialized renovation project, Bouten approaches every project with the same commitment to quality, partnership, and long-term impact.

These are the kinds of projects that don’t just add square footage—they support public safety, improve healthcare access, strengthen community organizations, and help build a stronger region for generations to come.

A Responsibility They Take Seriously

For Bouten, projects like these carry real meaning.

“The Prairie Medical Campus is more than just another construction project… jobs like this are the reason we come to work every day,” Thomas shared. “We’re humbled with the responsibility… to build a healthcare campus that will serve the community for decades and generations to come.”

Why They Joined the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber

As a new Visionary Member, Bouten Construction joined the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber to deepen their connection to the community—choosing our Chamber as a trusted partner uniquely positioned to bring people together, strengthen relationships, and create opportunities to engage in the future of our region.

Looking Ahead

As they look ahead, Bouten is focused on being even more present in the community and continuing to build strong, lasting relationships. They’re focused on showing up in bigger ways across the community, creating more opportunities for their team, and continuing to build the kind of relationships that have defined them for more than 80 years.
